The English department at Subiaco Academy is committed to enriching the students' lives through literature by exposing them to many genres, themes, cultures, philosophies and experiences. All students are expected to read analytically and write proficiently. To better prepare students for college-level reading, students in each grade are expected to read from four to eight books from an outside reading list of books not covered or discussed in class.
The English department has established a stable, structured environment for their students. For the last five years, the English department has encouraged student writing and student interest in the field of writing by sponsoring a literary symposium.
Each year a writer from a varying field is selected. His or her work is studied, the featured writer presents his ideas in assembly and workshops with other writers in similar fields are often encouraged. Students are encouraged to submit an article/story/poem to the writing competition open to all students.
Previous honorees include editorial writer Mr. Paul Greenberg, science fiction writer Harvey Wheeler, travelogue writer Mr. William Least Heat Moon, sports editor Mr. Bill Dwyre and news editor Mr. Kelly Kissel.
The English Department focuses on developing the writing, reading and speaking abilities of each student. Students are exposed to classical works and their authors. We endeavor to stress Christian values in literature and to note the contributions of Catholic writers. Through the cumulative experience of reading, writing and speaking, students develop critical thinking skills that enable them to be better prepared for college by learning the skills to analyze literature, develop perspectives on personal experiences, and make connections to local and global events.
