Subiaco Academy, a boarding/day high school for boys grades 8-12, is dedicated to providing young men with the opportunity for a college preparatory education in a stable and structured environment nourished by Christian values. The Subiaco experience also provides the opportunity to create a sense of community which is a reflection of Catholic Benedictine traditions of service to God, respect for self and others, mutual support, and the value of work.
Overview
Subiaco Academy has a rich tradition of educating young men. The education of youth has been a significant part of the apostolate of the Benedictine Monks for almost 15 centuries. Within a dozen years of the founding of the monastery in 1878, the monks took up the task of providing secondary education for young men in the local area and even began taking in some who would live at the monastery. The school, founded in 1887, has evolved over the years as the needs of the young men have changed with the times.
Subiaco Academy, a boys' college-preparatory boarding and day school, serves a diverse student body of 160 to 170 young men from many states and several foreign countries. The Academy is dedicated to preparing young men for college and for life. While most of the students are from middle-class families, the school has been successful in fulfilling its long-standing commitment to educating young men from all socioeconomic levels.
The curriculum at the Academy is designed to prepare each student for college. Students are required to complete 27 academic units to graduate. The school offers an extensive AP program with courses in science, mathematics, English, history, government, and fine arts. Each student is encouraged to complete 20 hours of community service per year. Every student participates in a minimum of 1 hour of extracurricular activities after school daily. Students may choose among organized sports, physical education, fine arts, or clubs which meet daily.
As an educational apostolate of Subiaco Abbey, the 100 acre-campus adjoins the Abbey's 1,700 acres of farmland. The campus is located in the Arkansas River Valley at the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains.
The Academy is separately incorporated as a non-profit institution whose Board of Directors are the members of Subiaco Abbey. The school is also served by a Board of Trustees of limited jurisdiction made up of lay men, lay women, and monks who set policy, oversee strategic planning, review budgets and finances, and ensure implementation of the mission and philosophy of the school.
The Alumni Association of more than 2,700 active members further supports the school with financial contributions, recruitment, and marketing efforts. The monies raised through this organization are spent to sponsor academic events such as the Subiaco Literary Symposium and to continue with the renovation and maintenance of facilities.
