Subiaco Academy has a culturally and linguistically diverse student population. The Department of Modern Languages capitalizes on this existing diversity by requiring all honors students to seek proficiency in a language other than their native tongue. This common goal promotes a sense of community, mutual support, and respect among the different national and ethnic groups on campus.

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) emphasizes the second language in real-life situations and develops students’ communication and interaction skills.  The outcome of adopting this teaching approach is to prepare language students to be confident communicators for different real-life contexts, through repetitive oral practices, collaboration and immersion experience.  In addition, teachers utilize student-centered learning in their classrooms to increase student’s motivation, help students take ownership over their learning, and build strong relationships.
