Welcome to this week's Subiaco Academy Spotlight! Our faculty and staff work tirelessly for our students and families, and we want to celebrate them! Every week, we feature a different faculty or staff member and learn more about what makes them tick. Today's spotlight is on Director of Subiaco Outdoor Adventure Program, Biology Teacher, Residential life Coordinator, Head Cycling Coach, and Assistant Wrestling Coach, Nick McDaniel. What's your favorite part of your job? Seeing the long term growth of our young men on the Hill. I am blessed to work with students in the classroom, dorms, on a bike, on the wrestling mat, camping trips, and everywhere in-between, and in doing so I get to see them develop as a person. Not just a student. Not just an athlete. But their whole person change. Do you have sons or daughters? What are their ages? No, just a dog named Bella. She is three and loves to explore outdoors even more than I. Especially if any boys from the Hill are with us. Where were you born and where did you grow up? Southern Iowa. Chariton, more specifically. What's your favorite spot on campus? Anywhere on a cold morning looking to the east as the sun rises over the main building. Please, name a more beautiful sight. What's your favorite food? My mom's homemade biscuits and sausage gravy. What was your favorite subject in school? The sciences, with a focus on my engineering courses. What activities or sports were you involved in during high school or when you were younger? Hunting, Fishing, Football, Wrestling, Track, and spending time with my friends around farm shops and pastures- as one does in Southern Iowa. Who is your favorite sports team? Iowa Hawkeyes When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A Mechanical engineer or Conservation Biologist What's your strongest memory from your first day ever at Subiaco? The awe of cresting the ridge to the north of campus and seeing all that the Subiaco Abbey is with Mt. Magazine in the background. For a native born flatlander- it was a pretty breathtaking view and unbelievable reality that it could be my home and workplace. What's a fun fact about yourself that others might be surprised to know? I played baseball for two summers, 6th and 7th grade. I was a B-team Allstar in baseball my seventh grade summer. After two bombs over center field in practice, I was 4th on the batting line-up where the real sluggers hangout.

Father Richard Rocha, the “Team Priest” for the Kansas City Chiefs might be the most influential person cheering at the Super Bowl this Sunday February 11th as KC takes on the San Francisco 49ers, and his impact can be eternal. Fr. Rocha grew up in Atchison, Kansas and was educated in Benedictine Catholic schools all his life, including his university years at Benedictine College. The priest will give this advice to players: “Keep grounded in your faith and focused on your purpose in life. You are here to know, love and serve God in this life and one day be happy with him in the next.” Committed Catholic players on the Kansas City team include kicker Harrison Butker, as well as some coaching staff and medical staff. To read more about the Chiefs’ team priest, and the influence that a Catholic Benedictine education had on his life, go to https://www.ncregister.com/interview/super-bowl-catholic-chaplain-father-richard-rocha-kansas-city

Over the last six weeks, students were instructed by Br. Augustine DeFoore OSB in Greek-Byzantine iconography (Icons are holy images painted on boards that became the primary religious art form in the Christian East). The students learned the rich history of iconography, the many different styles of icons that developed within the Eastern Churches, a bit of Greek, and how to write traditional icon inscriptions. Most of their time was spent creating their own icons with the option to make an Icon of the Blessed Mother (the Theotokos) or Christ 'the Mandilion'. The class ended with the traditional icon blessing including lots of chant and a shower of holy water. Fr. Cassian Elkins OSB provided the blessing and Br. Augustine filled the role of cantor.

This week our students met for their parallel curriculum courses. We encourage whole person development here at Subiaco Academy. Our parallel curriculum complements our academic program, and is developed around concepts of academic and life skills. Strengths-based learning, emotional intelligence, character and integrity-filled leadership, and entrepreneurship are the focuses of each grade-based group. See our 7-8th graders discussing life skills under the direction of our Subiaco community's registered nurse, as our freshmen class concentrates on strengths-based learning under the guidance of our Assistant Head of School for Academics and Communication.
